Day 5: Puente de la Reina to Estella/Irache - 26km

From my dad:
Another scene from the film, The Way
Life gets simplified along The Way.  We have water, baguette, almonds, and laundry tied to the back of our rucksacks.  We awake at six and are easily out the door by 6:30 AM.  The small village with steep walls is completely quiet with only a few of us peregrinos heading underneath the town arch and bridge heading west along the river.  Sue and I feel great as we head out into the vineyard region with the moon and stars as our guide.  I feel like we are in the Napa Valley with healthy vineyards and olive trees as far as you can see.
I blow the diet with a chocolate croissant about one hour into the day and Sue grabs her soda ... some things never change.
The locals love waving and wishing us a Buen Camino ... which gives us a great feeling and connection.  The Spanish dialect in this region does not resemble the language I know so communicating today has been interesting.
Sue and I have been staying in Pensions that range from 30-60 euro per night and we'll get a taste of our first Albuergue on Friday ... we'll see how Sue handles that hah hah hah!
Today we talked a lot about the beauty of the region, saw butterflies, cats, dogs, churches, rivers, mountains, bridges and walked through several quiet villages.  The 17th mile was in the heat, but once again Sue brought it home ... really proud of her!  Sue's shoulder is hurting from the backpack so I'll carry a few of her items tomorrow.  My knee and brace are golden ... thanks for prayers.
We'll walk down to the Irache Bodega tonight for more free wine ... see pictures ... incredible you just turn the faucet and viola there's free red wine!
We appreciate all the blog comments and Caitlin has informed us we have had over a thousand page views, so we feel your love and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you ... blessings!

  9. You guys shouldn't be stealing wine from the Church! That is so messed up haha. I'm sure it was probably moms idea. We love you guys and keep going strong and be healthy and stop stealing wine along "the way".

    Love Craig and Vanessa
